Versus THE RABBIT PUNCH DEFENSE (NICK BARROWS) | JOURNEYMAN'S LAMENT (MARK FLANIGAN) $14.95 | 7.5 x 9.25 | 100 pages | paperback | Pub Date: November 30, 2012
"The combination of the two marks a prodding of humanity and the human psyche that is sometimes dark, sometimes ethereal and sometimes humorous."
"The text, featuring the potent voices of Mark Flanigan and Nick Barrow, marks a dark, scathing, humorous and insightful form of poetic storytelling that becomes even more expressive via live performances."
Nick Barrows delighted audiences as the bombastic concertina-playing portion of the band Eagle to Squirrel. His words and lyrics, both sensitively self-reflective and raging can only be described as big, booming, and unforgettable. His other works have appeared in Forklift, Ohio: A Journal of Poetry, Cooking, & Light Industrial Safety, Trained Monkey Press, and Semantikon. He was also the music editor for The Citizen. His musical endeavors include The 4 Track All-Stars and Jack Burton Overdrive. In 2007 he released his first chapbook, Rockets on Bibles. Nick Barrows’ blog: nbboom.blogspot.com
Mark Flanigan is the introspective writer with the matter-of-fact cadence whose written works have been appreciated locally for years. His words express his battered but not beaten presence. His poetry reflects self-deprecation, and sometimes despair, but never without the light of hope.
Mark’s churned out his works for over two decades and his “Exiled” column for 11 years—first in X-Ray Cincinnati, then online at Semantikon, and finally at CityBeat. A noted performer, critic Mark Sterner once said of Flanigan, “He is a born story teller, and his readings come off with the sheer delight in words and in the quirky sort of life they are capable of expressing… Flanigan’s exultant poetry, heard aloud in the theatre, reminds us of what it is to be alive.” Mark’s free e-book, Minute Poems, is currently available online from Three Fools Press. Stories for Shorty: A Collection of Recollections from the Jockey Club 1982-1988
Twenty years after the demolition of the legendary Jockey Club, we thought a forum was overdue for the cast of characters who made up the JC freak show. YOU answered the call and Stories for Shorty: A Collection of Recollections from the Jockey Club 1982-88 was created.
Those of us who were there helped create this book to immortalizes the legendary Jockey Club of Newport, Kentucky as we remembered it in the 1980s. Everyone from Joey Shithead of D.O.A. to the Human Zoo himself, Bevo, contributed in not just conveying the importance of The Jockey Club to the Cincinnati, OH music scene but just how much it really meant to us. Thanks, Shorty!
NOTE: This book is currently OUT OF PRINT.
